We are designing for programs, and this requires us to know how these programs function on their own, disconnected from site.  At this particular site, we are designing for programs of: a cafe (5-15 tables), an outdoor overflow space for hosted events (30-80 people), parking (15-20 vehicles), and a staging area for (un)loading of large groups (30-40 people).

Silvia and I drafted the following diagrams using AutoCAD and Adobe Illustrator.  We are showing the space needed for these programs and how the space can be morphed depending on the program’s variables, such as angle of parking, grouping of people, and seating at tables.

At first glance you can see that “one of these things is not like the other” (was that School House Rocks or Sesame Street?) The functional diagram that illustrates groupings of people is more organic in form, with soft edges, while the others are made up of mostly orthogonal and angular lines.  I think this can be attributed to the fact that people are moving, living things and creating a static diagram that depicts this quality of being alive results in an organic (word choice?) form.
